Peru Quake

An 8.0 earthquake hit Lima, Peru, on August 15. Over 500 people were killed and 1,500 were injured. The next morning, Missionary Terry Schultz was able to contact Pastor Andres Robles, who lives on the south side of Lima. For nearly two years Pastor Andres has been making a trip down the southern coast once a month to Pisco (a 7 1/2 hour bus ride) and once or twice a month to Canete (a 4-5 hour bus ride). He serves four families in Canete and five families of migrant workers in Pisco. They come from the mountains to work during the cotton harvest. Pisco was one town that sustained much damage.
The earthquake was felt in Lima. The President of Peru called off elementary school classes so buildings could be checked for damage. Both missionary couples survived the tremors. The street scene was chaotic, filled with many fearful people.
Less than 36 hours after the earthquake, Pastor Andres Robles, Pastor Jaime and Missionary Terry Schultz drove to Pisco. Their car was loaded with thirty blankets and gallons of water to help the victims. First they found the members in Canete doing well with their homes intact.
In San Clemente, just outside Pisco, they located Pastor Andre's elderly sister, Placida, and brother, Serilo. Their adobe homes were completely destroyed, although both survived. They managed to save a few pots and plastic dishes. By God’s grace, the migrant families were not in town when the earthquake hit.
