"Who wants to read books written so long ago (935 B.C.) by a king who had 700 wives and worshipped false gods?!" It is true that while Solomon professed to be a follower of the true God, he eventually strayed from the faith into idolatry and polygamy. But remember that God can and does use men even from "tainted" backgrounds to glorify His Name: David the adulterer, Matthew the thief (tax collector), and Saul the murderer, to name a few. Solomon wrote from a perspective that virtually none of us would ever have experienced: extreme wealth, incredible power, and a huge harem!

Sounds of hammer blows and chainsaws disturb the days throughout the center of Florida and here in Winter Haven. The storm has left. Restoration continues. Piles of debris turning brown guard the streets. It will take time, some predict years, before things return to normal. Hurricane Charley was the worst storm to hit Winter Haven since Donna in 1960. It was nearly as devastating as Hurricane Andrew.

Martin Luther - 1504. Luther is 21. In America today twenty-five percent of all adults have completed at least four years of higher education at a college or university. It wasn't so in Luther's day. Five hundred years ago Luther was preparing for his examination for admission to the Master's Degree at the University of Erfurt, a major university with a student population estimated at 2,000.

Two boys were arguing at school. The country boy was trying to explain to his city friend that milk does not come from a carton but from a cow. He went home in frustration and said, "Mom, if he doesn't understand where milk comes from, how will he appreciate the dairy farmers?" To this his Mother added, "If we don't understand that it really comes from God, we won't appreciate Him either."

Mission work begins at home. This was clearly expressed by the Savior prior to His ascension into heaven. "You shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth" (Acts 1:8). We begin at home with our loved ones; then we reach out to our immediate neighbors, then to those farther removed, and then to those in the distant parts of the world.

Q. In the Old Testament, male children were dedicated to the Lord and seemed to be valued more than females. Why are girls now dedicated as well? Are we today more civilized, or do we merely interpret Scripture differently?
